The challenges of adolescent motherhood cannot be overlooked. In 2017 alone, 12 million girls aged 15 to 19 gave birth in low- and middle-income countries. This significantly increases their risk of mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance dependence.
This paper highlights the complex interplay of contributing factors—shifting identities, societal stigma, and underdeveloped coping skills—that place young mothers at greater psychological risk.
By recognising these challenges and implementing tailored support systems, we can empower young mothers to break the cycle of mental health struggles and build a better future for themselves and their children. This work reinforces the urgent need to invest in maternal and child health initiatives for a more equitable tomorrow.
